Mention Waitomo and everyone instantly thinks of the world-famous glow worm cave. However, this beautiful area is also home to incredible waterfalls, a hot water beach (yep, you read that right), hiking trails and experiences that make you wonder why this area isn’t on everyone’s “must-do” list.
Quick Summary
Top Tip: Spellbound Cave. This is possibly New Zealand’s best kept secret.
When to go: Waitomo isn’t immune to cold weather and also can get a lot of rain coming in off the coast! If you want to see the glow worms at their best, then make sure you visit during the summer (when they are in the caves in higher numbers, although there are still plenty in winter). If you want to avoid the crowds, then visit during the cooler months.
Peak Season: The caves are busy daily but December - January (summer school holidays) for the rest of the region.
Off Season: June - August.
