Overcliff Undercliff Track: a gorgeous easy walk in Wentworth Falls

If you’re looking for a gorgeous walk in Wentworth Falls, but don’t want anything too strenuous, then the Overcliff Undercliff Track is the perfect choice. You’ll walk underneath giant overhangs hugging the cliffside, with incredible views for much of the way.

There is also a short side trail to a pretty little rainforest gully and cascades. There’s even the chance to stop for a coffee or a bit of lunch part way through! Although there are a fair number of staircases to climb, much of the track is flat and it’s very well maintained.

Here’s what to expect on the Overcliff Undercliff Track.

The stats

Distance: 4.7km circuit including side trails
Elevation:
188m
Difficulty:
Easy
Time taken: The Overcliff Undercliff is an easy walk that only took around 1.5 hours at a very leisurely pace.

Starting the trail at Wentworth Falls Picnic Area

The walk begins at the picnic area and heads along the pavement past two lookouts, before heading into the bush. The lookouts offer great valley views, but you can barely see the falls, which doesn’t matter because this track has several great waterfall vantage points!

You’ll begin descending through the bush on dirt path on wide well maintained steps.

After 750m you’ll reach Fletchers Lookout. It only takes a minute to get down to the viewpoint and you’ll get your first good look at the top of Wentworth Falls.

It’s absolutely beautiful and you feel quite close to it, which is different to many of the other fall lookouts. If you look to the cliffs on the other side of the valley you might spot lots of tiny hikers beginning the Wentworth Pass Track.

Making your way along the cliffs

The walk then begins heading along the cliff walls, which are dripping in ferns and moss. It’s railed all the way and it doesn’t feel close to the edge, so even vertigo sufferers should be ok with this one.

You pass beneath so many overhangs on stepping stones which means you can entirely avoid all the mud, even on very wet days.

The views on the Undercliff Track - Blue Mountains

The views of the Jamison Valley are fantastic and at one point you get a fabulous completely open view of Wentworth Falls. It’s a really beautiful section of track and very easy.

At this point you won’t really have climbed any steps at all, which is a rarity in the mountains!

Onto Den Fenella Lookout

The walk then takes you into the bush and you’ll reach a junction where you can make a 5 minute (each way) detour to Princes Rock Lookout. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s worth heading up.

A few hundred metres further along the main trail you’ll come to a little bridge and a junction where you can take another short detour, this time to Den Fenella Lookout.

The sign says 200m each way, although it’s more like 300m. It takes you down some staircases and into a pretty rainforest gully.

The walk to Den Fenella Lookout

There are several cascades and it’s an atmospheric spot. At the end of the side trail you’ll reach the lookout which has lovely views out to the valley.

Not necessarily better than anything you’ve seen so far, but it’s a worthwhile side trip nonetheless.

The climb to the Conservation Hut

Once back on the main track you’ll begin making your way uphill towards the Conservation Hut. It will be the first uphill section of the walk.

It is relatively steep but all on really well maintained staircases so anyone can do it.

Finishing the Overcliff Trail

It’s all well signposted and whilst there are a couple of junctions you just need to keep following signs for the Conservation Hut.

The staircases are broken up with some good viewpoints, and roughly a kilometre from the start of the uphill section (there are flat bits inbetween) you’ll arrive at the junction with the Conservation Hut and the Short Cut Track.

Finishing the Overcliff Trail

The Conservation Hut is a great place to stop for a drink, especially on a hot day. They have a lovely terrace with gorgeous mountain and tree ferns views. If you’re visiting in winter there is a cosy fireplace inside.

Finishing the circuit with the Short Cut Track

The Short Cut Track is a straightforward walk through the bush. It’s almost entirely flat, with not much in the way of views, but you can walk it in around 15 minutes or less. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds because we often see them on this stretch.

The Short Cut Track will pop out of the bush right at the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area.

All in all, the Overcliff Undercliff Track is one of the best easy wins in the area. Whilst there are some climbs, it’s predominantly flat, yet doesn’t compromise on great scenery.

Getting to the Overcliff Undercliff Track

The walk begins at the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area which can get very busy on weekends. Parking is free and unlimited but can be hard to come by. If you can’t find a space, the nearby streets also offer free and unlimited parking. You could also begin this walk at the Conservation Hut but parking there is even more scarce!

If you don’t have a car you can catch the train to Wentworth Falls Train Station but it does add on about 30 minutes additional walking.
